Grasshopper biology varies with different species. To understand the difference between the grasshopper and cricket, it also helps to understand what they have in common. There are 4 species of grasshoppers on the Canadian prairies that when populations get high can potentially be pests of crops. Cool spring temperatures will slow grasshopper development.The relationship between temperature and rainfall affects the extent to which crops will be damaged by grasshoppers. In appearance these resemble adult grasshoppers, except for their size and the absence of wings. They are approximately 26 – 40 mm (1.0 to 1.6 inches) in length. Grasshoppers can be identified by their two antennas, four small legs, two enlarged legs and elongated shape.

As a general guideline, when many of the grasshoppers are third instars the hatch is over the peak, or almost completed. Generally, adult females are slightly larger than males.Although the life cycle of all grasshopper species is somewhat similar, the annual cycle may vary considerably.
