It is the fact that the action is believable that makes the film memorable, because in too many 2002 releases the action was so overblown and unrealistic (not to mention physically impossible) that the credibility of such films was destroyed. The main things that I didn't like were the revenge part (awfully lazy made) and the end (kinda Disney-cheesy).

My husband ranks it up there as one of his top favorite movies, but aside from the brief sword fight and “Can we come up?” scene in V for Vendetta, I really had no reference point–I thought it was all about dueling. I read "The Count of Monte Cristo" with new insights and understanding. A brilliant book by one of history's most original writers and creators of great heroes.Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016The Count of Monte Christo itself is a literary masterpiece. 4 out of 4 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? It is a famous story written by Alexandre Dumas, even better known from The Three Musketeers. 4 out of 4 found this helpful. If you've not read Dumas before, be aware that he sets up his characters and circumstances, creating mysteries, then departs from his main story line to pursue secondary characters. Most of us have heard about this book or heard of some reference to the Count. 61 out of 95 found this helpful. But, from my perspective, the blight was representative the casual racism harbored by many. Indeed, despite its wonderful locations and details, once the afore-mentioned prison scenes of this version presented themselves I was set to be depressed again and wondered where the story was going.

Was this review helpful? Odd strings of coincidences do happen, though rarely, but adding characters acting out of character all together is pushing past the limits. Was this review helpful? This was one of the better movies that i have seen in a long time.

I was a bit apprehensive about reading this because I thought that a novel written in 1844 would be a difficult read but I am beyond delighted that I overcame my apprehension.

But he did-in spades. With all of the twists and turns involved, this novel would lend itself beautifully to a multi-part MINI-series on any of the media channels available today, I believe that it shouldn't even be a part of this critique. I have to admit, having gone in with little expectation, i was flawed! 4 out of 4 found this helpful. Way better than any of the movies (I immediately watched two of them, after finishing the book). The consequences of his revenge are, however, sometimes tragic. Dumas (the father of the writer) became a respected general, fighting for the the ideals of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. This is one man's battle against himself, beautifully articulated egardless of which translation from French you choose to read. Real life can be weirdly coincidental, but not that weird. Was this review helpful? If you hadn't noticed yet (hopefully you have), this movie is based off of a famous book by Alexandre Dumas.

It is definitely one of the best books I have ever read. The tale of vengeance is well-balanced with tales of friendship, questing and plotting, and romance, and all of the implications each relationship holds, be it good or bad. I hired this one on a whim, remembering that i had seen the trailer and had been vaguely intrigued. I never even knew there was a film version of it until I mentioned my love for the book to a friend who informed me of the recently released movie that she too liked. Dantes will take on other roles not seen in the movie. The audience laughed with genuine awe as each new moment or detail was revealed to us in the plans of the main character's (played perfectly, from his innocent beginnings to his scheming later years)steps towards that end. But of course, because it’s French lit, I’d been putting it off. I put all kinds of films into this category.

You will meet other characters who play a role in Dantes' downfall and a sweet love story (involving characters that do not even exist in the movie!) (Without being a spoiler, I have to admit that I would have chosen a bit of a different ending.) The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas père.Translated and with an introduction by Robin Buss. 5 out of 5 found this helpful. It is truly an incredible piece of work written so many years ago by Alexandre Dumas.
It is pre-1900's. The acting was well done, the action sequences brilliantly plotted and enacted and the story was well written. Although the 1975 version directed by David Greene and starring Richard Chamberlain as Dantes is more close to the character sketch of Dumas novel, this latest rendition of the historic prison escape adventure cum revenge is also well crafted from the cinematic point of view. Eventually, the evil is more than reversed, initially by revenge, which in time is tempered by love, empathy, pure good luck, and ends with contrition and justice. I vaguely recalled it being an Alexander Dumas book, and former film/TV versions featuring rather depressing prison scenes with men tunneling to the freedom of the Sea. 183 out of 232 found this helpful. This was a newspaper serial story that was collected into a book. Was this review helpful?
