The film is characterized by sharp contrasts in action and viewpoints. Perfect casting, spectacular cinematography, and a great story. He avoids dialogue and concentrates on the nervous actions of the young woman gulping down water and tapping her fingernails repetitively on the side of a glass. Set against this darkness is a scene of family bliss in a wooden hut in the countryside. Then the full horrors of Stalin’s paranoid purges are forced on the audience. The entire cast is brilliant with Nikita Mikhalkov ( who also wrote and directed ) as the war hero and patriarch, and Oleg Menshikov as the man who sells his soul for survival standouts. However, the cinematography alone was worth an Oscar. The director succeeding in showing a certain class of people and their fragile lives and how those lives where steam-rollered by … Extraordinary film. I highly recommend it. His daughter asks him, ‘Can we drift like this for all our lives?’ The screenplay is poetic and succinct. The acting is purposely staged to give the scenes their rich theatrical air, yet there is a naturalism too, as Mikhalkov has such a fine eye for detail. The emotionally charged encounter down by the river between Mitia and Marussia is disrupted by the comic nuisance of Civilian Defence Workers seeking out volunteers for gas training. The camera lingers on the small detail of her wrists which are heavily scarred, her attempt to ‘obliterate’ Dmitrii from her consciousness ten years before. Knowing his demise he maintains the face of strength and security for his family. The film ends tragically, the protagonists scorched and burnt by ‘the sun of the revolution’. In his study for the last time, Kotov sits in his Red uniform and stares desperately at the framed photographs of Stalin and himself on the bureau. We slowly get to learn of Mitya's mission with a profound sense of foreboding. Like the fireballs that waft through rooms and over landscapes in this film, there is something magical about it that becomes more evident with each viewing. This is a terrific Russian film. A war hero, trusting in his friendship with Stalin and his hero status is double-crossed by the dictator as happened with so many of Stalin's friends from the revolution and war years.
He was bought by the Colonel and his Bolsheviks like a ‘whore’. Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2007I'm really into Russian literature and film and this one is pure cream. Set design and costumes too add to this mix. To reveal too much of the movie is to give away its stunning climax.

The period piece is Mikhalkov’s forte, and his detailed cinematic eye paints Renoiresque tableaux of the dreamy dacha, the beautiful river and woodland, and the characters which inhabit this environment. Set design and costumes too add to this mix.
I'm sure my understanding is incomplete because my Russian isn't strong enough to watch without the English subtitles. Mikhalkov always had a flair for Chekhovian drama, and he doesn't disappoint the viewer in this movie, which essentially updates "The Cherry Orchard" to Stalinist Russia. I can watch this film again and again. A moving tale of Stalin's terror as it affected one family among many. The photography enforces this impression, light deliberately kept out of the cinematic frame. Mikhalkov’s portrayal of life in Stalinist Russia is rich in pathos and humour, chaos and harmony.
The winner of many awards, ( including an Oscar for Best Foreign Film ) it shouldn't be missed, you'll see they were well deserved.
