Jean Le Fitte was a buccaneer sailing under a letter of marque for a South American nation that no longer exists. The late Cecil B. DeMille "supervised" this sluggish historical melodrama but did not actually produce it or direct it, and it might have benefited from some of the old showman's flamboyance. Lafitte sided with the Americans because he considered himself a Frenchman and therefore hated the British, not because of any sense of patriotism for a nation that had taken over New Orleans only a short time ago; he broke his agreement and returned to smuggling, which caused his sailing to Galveston; he was more of a petty criminal and scoundrel than a hero *or* a swashbuckler.

Quinn's version has not been seen since.

However, word of the signing did not reach New Orleans until weeks later.
