However, this is a brutal movie. Better luck next time; Funny Games, Fingered and countless cannibal themed films from Italy, respectively of course.
The films featured in this festival are also vastly international, underscoring the voices of various genders, colors, and ages. The most ambitious and exhausting film I saw at Fantasia was Obayashi isn’t much interested in literal coherence, especially in the dizzying 90 minutes that open the film.
Chan Wook-Park is for my money, the greatest film maker alive today.
He terms that event the “big bang” out of which modern Cuba was birthed. It’s not for nothing that Henry is made to have no voice, as Hardcore Henry’s unbelievably precise choreography of action seeks to tap into a universal feeling of powerlessness.
Although it is quite astonishing on what professional level Korean actors work, the strength of "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (by the way, a disturbing title already) starts with a well structured script. 94 out of 111 found this helpful. Like Cronenberg's "Crash" and Tarkovsky's "Stalker", one becomes defeated by a hypnotic sense of forboding, you are forced to endure it, pummeled into submission.
When Dazai is in the midst of a sexual conquest, Mika emphasizes less the heat of the action than the deliberate and inadvertent miscommunications that seem to be necessary to broker the act, as well as the physical limitations that come with being a sick addict. Was this review helpful? Who are the "bad guys"? Nolan strips locations of their specificity, echoing the broad strokes of your average Bond film’s depictions of other cultures: India’s streets are colorful and filled with sweaty locals, Oslo is a flatpack-laden marvel of architectural design, and Russia is a desolate wasteland. The exhilaration of virtual film festivals is that they radically expand the access and means of audiences. The exhilaration of virtual film festivals, which could and should prove revolutionary, is that they radically expand the access and means of audiences. Of course he is deceived loosing his money and kidney.
SYMPATHY is really a sad film of desperation, and the lengths that individuals may go to for family. Which is a shame considering its not like this throughout the whole film; the first half hour had a set-up that wasn't too confusing, with an entertaining bit or two, but...then there's a point where the main story takes its turn, and it never recovers. Was this review helpful? Chan-wook Park's mastery of cinematic language is stunning. But SYMPATHY is very different, as there are several people wronged in one way or another, and the only clear-cut "bad guys" may be the shady organ dealers (explained below), but are really just bit players in a much larger and more complex picture. 62 out of 77 found this helpful. Rufus, the man from the year 2688 who introduced Bill and Ted to time travel, and who was played in the other films by the brilliant George Carlin, is seen here as a hologram introducing the phone booth-like time machine that figured so prominently in Bill and Ted’s earlier adventures.
Due to the missing subtitles for the murmuring of a dying character at the end I can promise the non-Korean speaking audience an hour-long discussion of the political message which appears multi-leveled to me. Introverted nice guy Joel (Jim Carrey) hears of an experimental procedure to erase troubling memories, and dives right in when his impulsive girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), washes her brain clean of their love-shattered relationship.
The title could be applied to several of the main characters, as they each generate sympathy in their own way in spite of the deadly deeds they feel compelled to perpetrate. So says frequent poster and sometime reviewer owlman in his review of the excessively violent, needlessly shocking, gratuitous and ultimately boring Korean dud “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.” I’ve read hundreds of the reviews on this site, but never have I scratched my head in confusion like I did upon reading owlman claim, “[it] was not as extreme as some would have led you to believe.” The film’s singular ambition is to immerse the viewer in the thick of a frenzied drive toward the promise of a lover’s touch and a few more minutes of life. A naked man.
