The movie respects its hero, respects the school, and most of all respects the venerable Professor Kingsfield, tyrant of contract law.Kingsfield is really the movie's central character, even though Into his classroom every autumn come several dozen would-be Harvard law graduates, who fall into the categories we all remember from school: (a) the drones, who get everything right but will go forth to lead lives of impeccable mediocrity; (b) the truly intelligent, who will pass or fail entirely on the basis of whether they're able to put up with the crap; (c) those with photographic memories, who can remember everything but connect nothing; (d) the students whose dogged earnestness will somehow pull them through; and (e) the doomed.One of each of these types is in the study group of Hart, the movie's hero, and the one who is truly intelligent. He also cares about Kingsfield, to the degree that he breaks into the library archives to examine the master's very own undergraduate notes.But that isn't fatal because the fundamental relationship in the movie is between Hart and Kingsfield. In watching it again, I do agree with those who say the movie is very slow, possibly boring to some. John Houseman's Oscar winning performance as Harvard Law Professor Charles W. Kingsfield is the main draw of this film, but it's also a great time capsule of college life in the early seventies. The paper chase is closely coming up on their 10 year anniversary. I loved this movie. A confused but determined first year law student struggles to keep his head above water after he finds out that he is dating the daughter of his brilliant but hard-nosed Harvard professor who he desperately wants to impress. I believe the work of most first-year law professors in teaching by the Socratic Method, do the same job as a Marine DI in boot camp: Tears them down and rebuilds them. They mostly come across with a lot of weakness or self-assuredness bordering on arrogance.
(I could watch this about once a year - oh, right, I already do...just like "Chorus Line," "Mommie Dearest," "Appocolypse Now," and others, ha!)
