The series inspired a major motion picture and a short-lived NBC TV series.Damn, Jamie Delano really did write the best version of Hellblazer. It's definitely a good read, filled with strong, emotional writing and gritty, interesting characters. Where a storyline spans multiple issues but has no over-arcing title, the title of the first issue is used. John here is a failure. Constantine, however, totally deserves a solid movie for himself. An ancient and evil spirit.Of course Garry tries to capture said spirit and all hell breaks loose (literally).In his next adventure, Johnny uncovers a stunning secret and something we’ve all suspected –yuppies are demons from hell, literally.These upwardly mobile and ambitious young hell spawn are cashing in on the social decline, fear and fast living of 80s England.They offer over ambitious young professionals seeking fame, money and success Faustian bargains. But yes, it’s pretty cool that the Swamp Thing and Constantine are pretty close. I think that this weighs on Constantine, but it doesn't seem to motivate him to change his crooked ways.

He does what he does because he is a weak, selfish human being.It’s this intensely human failing that makes reading Jamie Delano captures the feeling of decline and rot of England in the late 80s.Margret Thatcher had successfully broken the trade unions and industrial manufacturing that had provided the working man with a level of safety, self-respect and comfort.You really feel transported into a world of suffering and social tension.A world where things go bump in the night and evil, demonic thing claw their way into our world.Beware, Delano tackles some hectic topics like drug abuse, child abduction, homophobia and AIDS. His appearances in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing are interesting enough to have me want to check out the original run.I like what you have to say about the art and the panel structure – it’s such an important element of any comic book, so many times have I been misdirected around a page due to messy/jumbled placing of word balloons and the flow of the images.I did see the Keanu Reeves movie and at the time I only had a vague inkling that it was based on a comic book character, interesting to learn from your review that it’s actually based somewhat on this story!I’ve never watched the TV series but have seen the JL Dark animated movie which was quite cool.What! These things only make sense because there is a paranormal investigator to legitimize the whole thing. As a side note, to kind of sex things up in the series the author has Constantine sleep with lots of women who are portrayed fairly one-dimensionally (aside from Abby in the Swamp Thing tie-in issues, who is complex and conflicted in her love for Alec/Swampy and embodies what is posited as the conflicted relationship between civilization and nature).Jamie Delano aka A. He’s definitely one of the most interesting characters in DC, and so fun to read.Likes: Constantine as a deeply flawed hero, magic/demonic elements, the love story with Zed, and how the plot with the Damnation Army built over the storiesJohn Constantine is really a tough character to like... and nice tales.

I can’t wait! I feel like we start to get into Constantine's head at this point, but he is not really developed as a character. Title: Hellblazer.

Part of it is just the fact that we are dealing with an insanely practical man from a working class background.But Delano also shows us that his ruthless actions and dead friends torture Constantine. John Constantine is kind of a narcissist, gumshoe/hardboiled detective-type with what feels like a fairly mild case of arcane powers (the magic is subtle in this book). I don't like I don't know what keeps me coming back to the Hellblazer comic. I don't like the black-as-tar writing: and yet I do, I do like the sickly purple prose of Constatine's inner monologue, the overdone, nauseating cranky poetics of his head.This totally throws you into the world of Constantine from beginning to end and it's just utter crackers and it's such a good read if you're after something slightly bizarre.
