The style of film I believe this film takes its cues from is the 1950's melodrama, e.g., PEYTON PLACE. One thing the film does really well is take a well-worn topic, but treat it with such dead-face sincerity that it almost comes off as a parody.
It's an attempt at noir that fails on many levels, including a weak plot and acting. Suburbia is a subject that has been tackled in numerous novels and films over the decades, and most of them have the same general message that the inhabitants of suburbia, despite the happiness on the surface, are actually troubled people. I bought this essentially for the captivating and award winning cinematography of Edward Lachman who also filmed 'Carol', both films are set in the 1950s and both reflect Edward Lachman's use of film media to reproduce colour in a vivid but natural way.
Todd Haynes would go on to create the solid TV adaptation of Mildred Pierce across five hours.
Julianne Moore is brilliant as the housewife living a life of "quiet desperation" and Todd Haynes directing is just masterful. were all stylized in such a way that it made me feel like I was watching a film from the 1950's. This movie is far superier from Todd Haynes' next film

This film is visually pleasing, beautiful autumnal colours - trees and the clothes...but I would give it 0 for the story lineReviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2015
Also this movie is dealing with Dennis Qade thinking that he has problem loving another man. One tends to take the blurb on DVD covers with a pinch of salt, of course, but for Todd Haynes’ magnificent 2002 film, Jonathan Ross’ talk of ‘close to perfection’ gets pretty near the mark as far as I’m concerned. Multiple concurrent streams and HD content may require higher bandwidth. It is a period piece set in 1950's New Hampshire, and revolves around a (supposedly) happy married couple played by Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid. Even the acting and line delivery was ever so slightly stilted to give off such a vibe. I was surprised by Quaid, he did a good job in this film, although I wish he were a little more likable. Having just seen Haynes’ equally moving Carol on the big screen I felt duty bound to re-watch Julianne Moore’s superlative performance here, and it strikes me that, in Moore and Cate Blanchett, Haynes has managed to elicit two great performances from arguably the two finest screen actresses of their generation. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 23, 2013 Forbidden love - a husband stuck in the closet and his wife's feelings for their black gardener - drives a tale of taboos and shocking scandal in a suburban world inspired by 1950s movie melodramas.

Moore, as usual, is perfect, too perfect and I get that was most likely her intention, as women back then were supposed to look and act perfect.

Still, it is lovingly crafted and features some fine performances from its cast.
The costumes, the color, the homes, the score!
It is 1950s and it is a huge issue being a gay.Gorgeous "period piece" with a truly touching forbidden love
However, the one element that brought everything together was the beautiful score by Elmer Bernstein which lent an air of longing and yearning that complemented the film's thematic concerns quite nicely.
