It had more of a romance than I was expecting, and lots of drama with several save the day coincidences, but that made it all the more entertaining. This is not helped by Maurice Jarre's soundtrack that bears no hint of irony in its saccharine devotion. The first publication was 1996, but I read the updated 2009 paperback from Broadway Paperbacks, NY. It is a fairly long, but who doesn’t have a few extra 20 hours on their hands right now? Britannica Premium: Serving the evolving needs of knowledge seekers. It is actually right up there with some of the best historical fictions I've ever read.

Pope Joan supposedly reigned, under the title of John VIII, for slightly more than 25 months, from 855 to 858, between the pontificates of Leo IV (847-855) and Benedict III (855-858). I was disappointed because it was engaging and very descriptive.

A dangerous game, if you ask me! Cross convinced me that Pope Joan was an actual historical figure who was briliant and compassionate and through her sheer force of will climbed her way up the church hierarchy right in the midst of the Dark Ages to be anointed as Pope. As fan of historical fiction I do believe this is a first for me, and I liked it.This was absolutely everything you could want in a historical fiction.

This genre and style of book is what I used to read and got me to love to read decades ago and so it felt very familiar and comfortable to me. For 1,200 years her existence has been denied. (82) The book is an argument for the existence of a female pope as we follow Joan's journey to the highest office of Christendom after the death of Leo III.

It put Joan in the worst light; she was willing to sleep with the guy but not commit. Her use, more than once, of amazing coincidences to get Joan out of trouble bothered me, but I couldn't fault the historical side of the novel. In a time where education is taken for granted and few students desire to work to the limits of their abilities, this book challenges a reader to reevaluate the gift of learning. I appreciated the research the author took on the period and customs of the times, which is not an easy task as so much is unknown about the dark ages.

To create our lis...It's been a while that I read the book and watched the movie (the longer TV version) but from what I remember the movie was quite OK. Allen and Company. I loved the first third or so of the book, but the rest could have been so much better. I didn't concern myself with that.

So few records remain that historians cannot agree on whether she actually existed, and the "facts" of her life are few, so the author had lots of scope for invention. It definitely had a feminist theme running through it, but again I didn't get wrapped up in it. by Ballantine Books (NY)

It was decent writing, the characters were strong--but there were a few problems for me. She was later christened “Joan,” and went on to become a widely accepted part of Catholic history. She then enters into the brotherhood of monks at a nearby monastery and distinguishes herself as an accomplished healer, but she also incurs the wrath of the Abbott. The forgotten “popess” first planted herself in the medieval imagination in the 13th century, when her story appeared in chronicles by the Dominican friars Jean de Mailly and Stephen of Bourbon. While you read it, you just forget to eat, to sleep, you forget the world around you.. so, if you want to read it, do it when you have a lot of free time ;)I loved Joan. As the story goes, this “Pope Joan” was a young woman who disguised herself as a man and entered into religious training.
