I don't think that the movie was ever intended to be dumb but I felt dumb watching it. But according to the laws of this country adoptive parents need to be a registered couple. Jean Reno (who would later become most famous for Leon the next year) is playfully a Dudley Do-right type of infantile schmuck, with a pretentious air as he is a rich man of the court. I didn't find it very funny, but then I didn't find Black Sheep or The Cable Guy very funny, either, so maybe the problem is with me or, more likely, maybe all three films need to be sealed into capsules and shot into space.

A medieval knight and his servant ask a familiar wizard to move them back in time to prevent father-in-law's accidentally killing. Though crude in many respects, it's still a cult classic because it goes where other films don't.

Fair farce about a medieval knight (Jean Reno) who is transported to 1990's France to undo a curse leveled on him because he killed his fiancée's father. Extremely funny and imaginative!

The slapstick needs something to structure it, and it focusses solely on Les Visiteurs themselves (ancients trying to cope with the modern world), and it reminded me a bit too much of Bill and Ted too, but it got better as it went along. The reason it was so big was the allure of a national film, a film of France, and this film does that by linking the rich heritage of an entire country and showing how much of the country as a whole has changed.
