I had not previously watched this movie and enjoyed the story and the great 60's vibe, could be partly my nostalgia for that time when I was young! A comparatively little known example of early 1960's Italian comedy with a lot of social commentary/observation.

Roberto, a shy law student in Rome, meets Bruno, a forty-year-old exuberant, capricious man, who takes him for a drive through the Roman and Tuscany countries in the summer of 1962. There is much more to this movie than it seems at first.

Having lived in Rome for many years both in the sixties and seventies, it accurately captures what life was like for many back then in the spirit of "La Dolce Vita," only more realistically than one saw in the Fellini film.

Il Sorpasso is a term that I've heard since childhood. I enjoyed most of this film but the ending what somehow misplaced in my opinion.Trintignant and Gassman are a great team.

This film like no other beautifully captures the good and the not so good fleeting moments, and gives the viewer something to think about in regards to reckless life and consequences of living such life. Good movie for learning Italian idioms as well.

Bruno a middle aged fun and easy going wheeler and dealer meets the young and shy Roberto, an Italian law student. Il Sorpasso is a manifest of Italian classic comedy, a perfect description of Italy and a dramatic and bitter tale of life and youth illusion. (I am an inveterate film buff, and must confess with shame that I had never heard of Risi nor of this, his masterpiece.)

Anyway you can easily get the contraddiction of this man and the strange attraction to his opposite, a young and magical Trintignant. For anyone who studies Italian movies, this is a must see. Un Méditerranéen très en verve, désinvolte, charmeur et... fanfaron, fait la connaissance d'un étudiant en droit studieux, timide et complexé. Criterion's DVD is good quality but expensive.
