It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. If it's necessary, then I don't have a problem with it, but I really felt it could have been toned down here. Nope. The film stars Sarah Silverman as an upper-middle-class wife and mother struggling with mental illness and addiction. I think not. We've got you covered with the buzziest new releases of the day.

I also highly recommend Melancholia with Kirsten Dunst if you are interested in this vein of film. With Sarah Silverman, Josh Charles, Skylar Gaertner, Shayne Coleman. I REALLY wanted to like this movie. 3 1/2 stars - The prose and the language was beautifully structured, but the story line was quite depressing and unresolved, making it hard to give this book a higher rating.Dark look into an unhappy soul. This movie is heavy, but realistic in it's portrayal of how bad a dark addiction to alcohol and drugs can be.

Beautiful writing?

The reader is compelled to identify and sympathize with Laney, a depressed, alcoholic and drug-addicted housewife, who has it all but is unhappy.

It is a powerful account of a tortured, smart, cynical venomous, loving married mother of two beautiful children who seems to have it all, except in her psyche.

The plot sounded interesting, although not very unique, so I was in.The redeeming moments are few and far between - but that is what addiction looks like I recommend this book to anyone who struggles with day to day life sometimes. I had little sympathy for the main character and her series of bad choices. The film, starring Sarah Silverman, premiered at the 2015 Sundance, Toronoto and Deauville Film Festivals. She feels as if she needs something "other" even though this was the life she had chosen for herself. The language is vulgar, the sex graphic and neither of those things is necessarily needed in the context of the book. It reads like poetry and explores the "messed up" mind of Laney, a suburban housewife and the protagonist. Koppelman and her screenwriting partner adapted I Smile Back for the screen. I'm sure not many want to admit this, but I did relate to the protagonist in a lot of ways. It's a shorter book, but instead of racing through, as I thought I would, I lingered, because although so much is on the page, there's even more that's left for us to put together. Got on a good "cocktail" at last but there is Always "bleed-through" of manias & depressions. While I don't think the film was perfect, I think it was a good depiction of the battle so many face with depression/mental illness. Koppelman has some points of good writing throughout the book, but for the most part it just stinks.A dark look inside a woman who isn't happy with the standard suburban life. “I Smile Back's” stream of consciousness narrative plunges the reader directly into Laney's mind, and that's why I loved the book's style.

The main character is hell-bent to destroy herself and her current life, but it's not because she's rebelling against suburbia, necessarily.

It's a good, well-written piece about a modern woman struggling with depression, addiction, and dissatisfaction. She wants to recapture the magic and comfort she felt as a child but only during the days before her father abandoned her and left the family for good.This book should have a way higher score on Good Reads. Not 1 single redeeming quality in this book. This felt less like a look into the mind of someone seriously deranged and more like a woman who simply decided she no longer wanted to handle the responsibilities of the choices she made. The human condition ... A brave book.This was my favorite title from 2008.
