I think that the main point is that the water abroad just varies so much in terms of level of filtration and other nasties, that while the locals may have built up an immunity, travelers won’t have. I was surprised about South America not having any safe water. However some regions of the United States have terrible drinking water, and travelers may not be accustomed to the high levels of chlorine in parts where it is considered safe.As I mentioned, the above info-graphic is highly conservative, for instance Hungary is very proud of the water, and there are very old and very fancy public drinking fountains throughout Budapest which tourists rarely find problem with.
