Randolph Scott stars in director Sam Peckinpah's ode to the taming ofthe American frontier and passing of the West's values of individual survival and integrity ... as a pair of aging lawmen, for one last time, Ride the High Country. Released at the tail end of the western genre, and virtually thrown away by MGM, Ride the High Country feels like an elegy for the western itself -- and Peckinpah himself would go on to revise western conventions with such later efforts as Peckinpah (1969) and Peckinpah (1973).
When he gets hired to escort a shipment of gold, he decides to enlist the help of his old pal played by Randolph Scott. The film featured Scott's final screen performance.In the early years of the 20th century, an aging ex-lawman, Steve Judd (Judd, Gil, and Heck ride up into the mountains toward Coarsegold (A Sierra foothills town north of Fresno ) mining camp. This film come out during a transition period for the western genre.

The two young people are quite good, especially Miss Hartley, a newcomer with real promise.

Unlike McCrea's character, Scott's doesn't have much remaining integrity, and thus is easily tempted, along with his young saddle mate to convince McCrea's Steve Judd to steal the gold for themselves instead of delivering it as expected. | Rating: 2/5
