Fires on the Plain

I was struck by how it didn't really have much of an ideological tilt. War is schizophrenic. Fires on the Plain is another addition to the bleakest, most disturbing war films ever. Trapped on Leyte near the end of the war, the ragged remnants of the Japanese army are doomed, they just don't know it yet.

Eiji Funakoshi gives a remarkable performance as private Tamura... he is gaunt, confused and quietly desperate, yet through it all his eyes…A surreal, nightmarish horror movie dressed as a war film, which pretty convincingly argues that war is a surreal and horrible nightmare.

Fires on the Plain (1959):It is the Philipines, 1945. How is this not classified as a horror movie? At the end of his novel, everyone would die a glorious and noble death. The film is much more than just that, though. Maybe a movie this bleak wasn’t the best choice right now as some of the images were a little too reminiscent of current events.While there are plenty of anti-war films that showcase the overwhelming gore and horrific violence that wars bring, the most effective anti-war films are those that don't need to do that. This is about an older, more thoughtful / observant, Japanese soldier in the Philippines during World War II called Tamura. It is that good.Even though, Fires On The Plain doesn't really acknowledge the wartime atrocities committed by the Japanese (there were several unnerving scenes towards the end though), director Ichikawa's masterful direction and the way he portrayed his characters were extraordinary. They only had the aid of nurses. The movie unflinchingly portrays the demoralized Japanese forces at the end of World War who eventually turned to cannibalism and other cruelties as a means to survive.Movie was unsettling, often outright disturbing and brilliantly written. To what extent are the Japanese willing to go in order to bring more credible performances?
